Spring cleaning has sprung! It's time for that annual right of passage… spring-cleaning! Clean out those bulging closets, scrub and organize the home from top to bottom. (Don’t forget the carpets and upholstery... call us.
The following tips, though not complete, will help make this annual chore a little easier to tackle. When washing windows, rub vertically inside and horizontally outside. Any overlooked section will be easily detected.Remember, windows will streak if washed when the sun is directly on them.
Remove hard water deposits from showerheads by pouring vinegar into a sandwich bag and taping the bag around the showerhead. Wait up to 1 hour and wipe clean.Brighten chrome fixtures by rubbing with kerosene on a damp cloth. (Please, not while smoking)Remove stains from laminated countertops with a paste of baking soda and water.
Apply, leave on for 2 minutes, and rub to remove. It won't scratch the surface.Use black liquid shoe polish to brighten wrought iron.Clean aluminum window frames with silver polish.
Prevent aluminum doors and windows from pitting by rubbing twice a year with kerosene.Glue pieces of old carpet or heavy wool to the bottoms of chair legs. They will slide more easily without marking up vinyl or hardwood floors.Flip mattresses over and turn end to end. Place a strip of masking tape in an inconspicuous spot labeled with the date you turned it.
Try a pumice stone to remove calcium ring from toilet bowls and sinks.To clean ceramic tile, use vinegar on hard water spots, kerosene on water scum. To make a general all-purpose cleaner, use this recipe: 1 pint alcohol, 7 pints water, 2 tablespoons ammonia, 1/8 teaspoon dish detergent.
Mix in the order given, into a plastic gallon jug. For really tough cleaning, use half the water. Pour into a spray bottle and you're ready to do doors, windows, walls etc. for a fraction of the cost of store bought cleaners. Do not use on carpets or upholstery. Do not mix ammonia and vinegar together. They will neutralize each other.Vacuum cobwebs instead of smashing them on the surface with a broom or dust mop.
They are sticky and can leave a stain.Wash your painted walls instead of repainting. It's faster and cheaper. You can have them professionally washed for a fraction of the cost of repainting.
When washing walls or floors, use two buckets. One with a cleaning solution, one with clear rinse water. Rinse your sponge or mop in the rinse water before placing it in the solution bucket.
Change the rinse water frequently. You will use less cleaning solution with this method.Remove crayon marks from painted walls with lighter fluid.Remove black shoe marks from flooring with an eraser.
To wash window screens, lay them on a flat surface with an old sheet underneath. Apply cleaning solution, scrub them gently with a brush, rinse with a hose and shake off excess water.
Rotate area rugs so that they soil and wear more evenly. If they have a pad under them, vacuum it annually.Use a hair dryer to blow dust from dried flower arrangements or silk flowers before vacuuming the room.Remove candle wax from holders by placing them in the freezer for an hour. Then peel off the frozen wax.
